Vendor Highlights: Mary Margaret Smith Photography

Mary Margaret Photography Interview - Paper Swallow Events

Today I am so excited to introduce you to a vendor that I have really enjoyed getting to know and working with! Mary Margaret and I worked together when she second shot shot Maddie + Shane's Hunter Museum wedding. I loved Mary Margaret's relaxed, cheerful, and non-invasive attitude the entire wedding day, and I really loved having her be part of the vendor team that day. She is definitely someone I would enjoy working with again and again, and I just know you guys are going to love her too! Read on to find out a little bit more about her and then go check out her beautiful blog!

xoxo, Stacia

1. Tell us a little about you

My name is Mary Margaret (MM is acceptable, too!), and I live in Birmingham, Alabama with 2 little schnauzers, Liesl and Fritz. We spend most of our weekdays at home while I’m editing photos (and drinking coffee), but take any chance we get to go outside for walks and hikes. Most weekends I'm shooting weddings and engagements, which I love!

2. What is your favorite kind of bride to work with (your ideal client)?

My ideal client is fun, laid-back, and unique. I love working with couples who are excited about the details of their day, but who are also focused on spending their wedding with their friends and family as they marry the love of their life.

3. How would you describe your personal photography style?

My goal is to capture a wedding as it unfolds. I love documenting not only the look of the wedding day, but the feeling of it, as well. So I would definitely say I lean toward the documentary style of shooting – capturing as many details, portraits, and authentic moments as possible!

4. What keeps you coming back to photographing weddings even after a rough day?

I truly love what I do, but no matter what field you're in, you’re going to encounter stressful times. Life, in general, has its good and bad days! I keep coming back because of the good days (which, thankfully, very much outweigh the rough ones). When I get to capture the most exciting day of a bride and groom's life, when people are so warm and welcoming that I leave a wedding feeling like part of the family, when I get a message from a couple telling me they looked through their images and laughed and cried because it felt like they were reliving their wedding through the photos, that's when I keep coming back. I love being a part of such a joyful and significant day in people's lives, and I'm so happy to be able to document it for them to always look back on.

5. What is a daily task that you can't do without?

That one is easy - coffee and cereal! It may be more of a routine/addiction than a task, but that's how I start every day! That and walks with the dogs, of course. :)

6. What made you choose Birmingham, AL as the place to base your business?

I'm originally from Birmingham, so I just lucked out! The past couple of years, B'ham has been going through a revival, and I've loved seeing how this new surge of energy has brought the community together. The atmosphere feels so creative, and I'm happy to have my business in an area full of growth and excitement. I love this city, and feel fortunate to be a part of it. All that said, I do still love opportunities to travel and shoot in new places when I get a chance!

7. Do you have any encouraging words to share with brides in the middle of planning their wedding?

I would encourage brides not to put too much on themselves. Let your friends, family, and vendors help you! Do what you can to enjoy the time celebrating with your family and friends as you begin your marriage with your favorite person!

8. How can brides get in touch with you if they are interested in working with you?

They are welcome to visit my site www.marymargaretsmith.com. Feel free to send a message if you're interested in knowing more about my photography, or if you just want to say "hey!" I also love Instagram (@mary_margaret_smith), which is where you will find photos of my work and personal life, including Liesl and Fritz!
